Carl Velner died Saturday, December 22, 2007 in Gassville. He was 73. He was born in 1934 in Michigan, the son of Aloysus Velner and LaVaugn Buska. He married Priscilla Southworth in 1968 in Nevada. Carl lived in Gassville for 10 years moving from California. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Korea serving from 1952 - 1956 and worked as a Truck Driver for Widing Transportation. Mr. Velner was a Teamster Member for 30 years and served as recording secretary for his local San Leandro, CA until his retirement. When he retired in 1992 he joined the Alameda County Sheriff's Department Grafitti Eradication Program. Later in 1997, he joined the Midway Volunteer Fire Protection District as a firefighter and later became commissioner. He was a tour guide at the Bull Shoals Powerhouse. He was an instructor reservationist and assistant state coordinator for a well known driver's safety program. He was appointed to the Baxter County animal control advisory board. He was a greeter for the Bull Shoals Visitors Center, and was a member of the Twin Lakes Sub Vets, where he served as chaplain and was currently the vice commander. Carl was a volunteer at Baxter County Historical Society. He was a member of North Central Arkansas Humane Society. Survivors: Wife, Priscilla Velner, daughter, Tammy (Pete) Dunstan, of California, brothers, John Velner and Paul Velner of Michigan, 3 nieces, Dawn (Virgil) Miller of Promise Land, Arkansas, Sharen (Chuck) Marshall and Paulette (Bill) DeHommel of Michigan, 2 dogs; Quincy and Reno, 2 cats; Whiskers and Smokey. Preceded in Death by: Parents, 1 sister, Loys Tucker and 4 pets; Scooby, Socks, Barnie, and Rockkey.
