Donald Garrett

Donald Ray Garrett was born March 8, 1927 to Ralph and Daisy Leist Garrett and was raised in Pittsburg, in the southeast part of Kansas. Don married Maxine Johnson on June 5, 1942 in Webb City, Missouri. As a young man he worked in the coal mines, then moving in the 1950's to Kansas City, Missouri, where he worked for Westinghouse and Fairbanks & Morse. In 1959 Don and Maxine bought George's One Stop, which was a service station and a bait & tackle shop in Bull Shoals. They moved to Bull Shoals in February, 1960 to take over their new business. At that time Don and Maxine started George's Fishing Service, which offered float trips on local rivers for trout and small mouth bass fishing. Bo Martin was the first guide hey hired. They had to work fast because you had to be ready for the trout fishermen when the trout season opened March 1st . Don was self-employed with a service station, sold bait & tackle, then he later he built a small grocery store. Not only did he build the first car wash but he also built the first Laundromat in Bull Shoals. Don also started the Crystal Clear Ice Company for block and cubed ice which was later sold and is now located in Mountain Home. Don and his son Danny were partners in Garrett General Hauling. He and Danny also put in the electric, water and telephone lines for Woodstone and Rivercliff Subdivisions in Bull Shoals. Don started in business in 1960 and moved to Flippin in 1975 to retire. After suffering a stroke in 1988 he moved to Mountain Home to be closer to the Hospital and his doctors. He was a World War II veteran, a member of the Yellville Masonic Lodge # 117 and was of the Methodist Faith. He was constable of Bull Shoals for approximately 10 years and served as a member of the Bull Shoals Volunteer Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, and Bull Shoals Lake & White River Association. Don has spent his retirement years in Flippin, Mountain Home, Florida, Brownsville and South Padre, Texas. He loved fishing the ocean surf and Bull Shoals Lake and deer hunting with his group of friends. Survivors: Don is survived by his wife, Maxine of the home, one son Danny R. (Pat) Garrett ; one daughter; Tammy (Mike) Hodges both of Flippin, Three granddaughters: Karen (Chris) Carter of Yellville; Sandra (Tony) Davenport of Yellville and Tory Hodges of Mtn. Home; one grandson, Michael Don (Margaret) Hodges of Bull Shoals; nine great grandchildren; Ray Wayne and Lindsey Davenport, Scott, Eric and Cameron Carter, Macie Kate Rorie and Peyton Bodenhamer, Preston and Alexandria Hodges and one great great grandson Kyle Carter. Preceded in Death by: Don was preceded in death by his parents, one infant daughter Debra Sue, one sister Eula Stolte and one brother Roy Garrett. Visitation: The family will recieve friends from 12:30 until service time at 2:00. Funeral: Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at the Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel in Bull Shoals, Arkansas with Reverend Nicholas Lascaro officiating. Burial: Private burial will be in the Flippin Cemetery Memorials: Hospice of the Ozarks Hospice House.
