A Memorial Service for Donald L. Nielsen, 88, of Bull Shoals, AR will be 11AM Thursday May 1, 2014, at Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church in Bull Shoals, AR with Reverend Mike Clark officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Hoevel-Barnett V.F.W. Post #1341 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guards. Donald died April 28, 2014, at Gassville Therapy & Living Center.
Donald was born September 6, 1925, at Chicago, IL to Alfred C. and Sylvia Simonson Nielsen. Donald was a WWII veteran of the United States Navy serving on the Destroyer Escort USS Wiseman. He worked as a carpenter for the Chicago Tribune for over forty years. After retiring, Donald moved to Bull Shoals in 1997 and married Marie VanOverstraeten Martin in 1999. He was a goodhearted, straight talking man and a good husband and father who was loved by many. Donald was always active in the church and continued his participation as a member of Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church. He was a member of Post #1341 Hoevel-Barnett VFW.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marie of Bull Shoals, AR; children, Diane Gross (Joseph) of Fairview, AR, Rev. Debra Leone of TX, Donna Iniguez, Don Nielsen, Dale Hildebrand (Ken), Connie Racke (Tom), Curt Nielsen, Charon Bappert (Martin) all of IL; two step-children, Art Martin (Sherry) of Mtn. Home, AR, Debbie Blevins (Nick) of Cotter, AR; eighteen grandchildren, nine step grand-children; eighteen great-grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents; mother of his children, Charlotte Nielsen; one brother; one sister and two grandchildren, Jeffrey Iniguez and Donnie Nielsen preceded him in death.
Memorials may be made to Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Arkansas or the Humane Society of North Central Arkansas.
