LTC Major passed away on March 18, 2009 at his residence. He was born to Dorrance Davenport and Bert Thompson Major on May 22, 1930 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He was a graduate of the Columbia Military Academy, Columbia, Tennessee and Mississippi State University, Starkville, Mississippi. He entered the United States Army as a draftee in 1954 and finished Field Artillery Officer's Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Also, he attended the Field Artillery Officer's Career Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Foreign assignments included Germany, Ethiopia, Vietnam and Thailand. LTC Major retired from the United States Army in 1980 at the Defense Logistics Agency Depot at Memphis, Tennessee. After retirement in the United States Army, LTC Major started the Metro Flying School in Olive Branch, Mississippi. He was a flight instructor, charter pilot and corporate pilot. In 1990, he retired again to Cotter, Arkansas and continued his great love for flying. Survivors: Survivors include his wife, Gail Major of Cotter, Arkansas and one daughter, Carol M. Rose of Lafayette, Louisiana and two sons, Bill Major of Belton, Texas and Jim Major of Bartlett, Tennessee, and four grandchildren. Preceded in Death by: He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Dorrance Davenport and Bert Thompson Major and his youngest son, Ken Major of Georgetown, Texas. Funeral: A Memorial service for LTC Dorrance Davenport (Don) Major will be Sunday, March 22, 2009 at Twin Lakes Baptist Church Senior Adult Complex at 2:00 P.M. with Jack Pepper and Reverend Ricky Hart, officiating. Memorials: Memorials are requested to be sent to the Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation or Hospice of the Ozarks.
