A Celebration of Life for Douglas Leonard VanDeMark, Sr. of Bull Shoals, Arkansas, will be 5:00 pm, Monday, June 12, 2017, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home Chapel in Bull Shoals, Arkansas, with Heather Marsalis, Celebrant officiating.
Doug passed away June 2, 2017, in Bull Shoals, Arkansas at the age of 86. He was born April 1, 1931, in Brooklyn , New York, the son of Leonard and Helen Jamieson VanDeMark. He married Phyllis Waters on July 21st 1951, in Wood River, Illinois, three months after they met at a USO dance. Doug was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and worked as a heavy equipment mechanic retiring from the County of Rockland, New York. He was a 27 year resident of Bull Shoals moving here because of his love of fishing, but quickly became a well know fixture of the community. He and wife Phyllis are the last remaining charter members of the Bull Shoals Fire Department Auxiliary. Doug served as a city councilman and started the recycling program for the city of Bull Shoals. Doug's love of building and flying model airplanes continued throughout his life right up until the day he passed away.
Doug is survived by his wife, Phyllis VanDeMark of Bull Shoals, AR; sons, Douglas (Carry) VanDeMark, Jr. and David Robbins of Bull Shoals, AR; daughters, Debbie (Sheila Prisco) Cotter of Greely, PA and Deanna Thorpe of Stony Point, NY; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and his many friends, because we all know Doug never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
