Edna Daugherty

Edna Pressly Holmes Daugherty, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, passed from this life on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the Gassville Nursing Home, Gassville, AR. Edna was born on March 1, 1918, in Barnard, Missouri. She was the daughter of the late Vernell C. & Lulu (Curnutt) Holmes. She is preceded in death by her parents, step brother Paul Holmes, brother Hershel Holmes, and loving husband, Glenn.

Edna grew up in the NW Missouri, SW Iowa area and graduated "with honors" from Filmore H.S., Filmore, MO in 1935. She went to college at N.W. Missouri State University, in Maryville, MO and received a teachers certificate. She started her teaching career in rural one room schools around Elmo, MO, where she met and married Glenn A. Daugherty, on February 14, 1942. During WW2, while Glenn was serving in the South Pacific, she taught in the "Tile Factory" one room school near McClean, IL. After the war, Edna and Glenn purchased a farm S.W. of Clarinda, IA, where they lived for 29 years. During this time, Edna went back to college at N.W. Missouri University and received her Bachelors of Education degree. She then taught grade school in Clearmont, MO, Braddyville, IA. (both for the Braddyville school system and the South Page school system). She ended her teaching career at Garfield grade school in the Clarinda school system. Edna was an active Cub Scout leader for both of her sons. Edna was a member of the Christian Science Church, and the Eastern Star, both of Clarinda. Edna loved sewing, working in her flower garden, her church, and was devoted to her family.

In 1983, Edna and Glenn moved to Mountain Home, AR, where they enjoyed boating, dancing, entertaining, traveling, and of course her garden. She was a member of the Christian Science Church, and the Cedars and Seeders Garden Club in Mountain Home.

She is survived by a sister, Belvadene Jolliff of Black Mountain, NC; two sons, Allan and wife Judy (Thurman) of Mountain Home, AR and Charles and wife Beth (Hart) of San Miguel, CA; grandchildren, Jeffrey and Dustin Daugherty of Marietta, GA, Shannon and husband Ted Mahoney of Orleans, MA, and Casey Daugherty of Scottsdale, AZ; great grandchildren, Rylee, Clover, and Miles Daugherty, Seamus and Dylan Mahoney, Riley and Hunter Gajdos, several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A Gathering of Friends will be from 2:00 until 4:00 pm, Friday, May 15, 2015 at the Kirby & Family Funeral Home.
