Elmo Hurst, age 98 of Cotter, AR and a lifetime resident of Baxter county, passed from this earthly life on December 24, 2007. He was born at Lone Rock on March 9, 1909, to Baxter and Lula Rose Hurst. His parents moved the family to Cotter when he was 9 months old and he has lived on the same White River farm all of his life. He graduated from Cotter High School in 1929 and attended college at Arkansas State A & M, Jonesboro, majoring in Animal Husbandry and Agriculture. Elmo and Lucille Marsden were united in marriage on July 28, 1933. That year they started the Hurst Fishing Service. They were owners and operators until they sold it in 1965. Lots of days they had 35 to 40 boats out on the White River, Buffalo River and Crooked Creek. He also raised Hereford cattle. To this union were born 2 children, Sarah and Philip, both of whom survive. Lucille passed away June 4, 1984 after a long battle with cancer. Elmo and Gene Chadwick were married November 25, 1987. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, four sisters; Thelma, Nathalie, Argie and Lois, 2 brothers; Robert and Bill. Elmo leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Gene Hurst of the home, a daughter Sarah (Bill) Ernst of Cotter, a son Philip (Nancy) Hurst of Cotter, a brother, Woodrow (Dottie) Hurst of Parachute, Colorado and Sister-in-law, Virginia Hurst of Mountain Home. 2 Granddaughters, Staci Ann Hurst and Melissa Sue (Drew) McKinnon of Fayetteville, 2 grandsons Jordan Matthew Hurst of Fayetteville and Holden Chadwick of Blue Mountain, AR., a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation will be 5:00 - 8:00, Thursday, December 27 at Kirby & Family Funeral Home. Services will be at First Christian Church 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 28, 2007 with Reverend W. Robert Bell officiating. Burial will be at Walnut Hill Cemetery. Philip Hurst, Garland Hurst, Bill Ernst, Bob Russ Hurst, Brad Hurst, and Kelly Hurst will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Forrest Wood, John Hawkins, Roy Danuser, Bill Johnson, Wayne Ward, Rudy Ilmberger, Roger Trimble, Chuck Morrow, Jay Baker, Dr. Richard Burnett, and Dr. Bob Baker. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Ozarks.
