Mrs. Evelyn McIntyre

October 20, 1918 — October 22, 2014

Evelyn McIntyre, 96, of Deer Lodge Montana. died peacefully with family by her side, October 22, 2014 at the Deer Lodge Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Evelyn was born, the youngest of six, at Auchmacoy, Aberdeenshire, Scotland on October 20, 1918, to William and Rebecca (Stott) Low. At the age of 5, she was taken in and raised by her eldest sibling, Willie and his wife Belle Low. Evelyn loved them dearly.

Being from a family of blacksmiths and musicians, she had many fond memories of helping out in the "smittys" and traveling by motorcycle and side car to country dances in her youth. She attended schools in Aboyne and Newburgh.

With the onset of WWII, she, like other young women was given the choice of working in the ammunition plants or going into the military. As she would say, she did not like the idea of being the target and thus joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She spent 4 years stationed on the English coast firing "Heavy Anti Aircraft" artillery. She was proud and cherished the lifetime friendships made with the other women she served with. It was also during this time that she met James McIntyre, a young U.S. Air Corpsman, serving as a navigator in a B-24 bomber squadron. Though born in Scotland, he had immigrated to America in his youth. They were married on Valentine’s Day, 1945, at Foveran Church in Newburgh, Scotland. They remained in Great Britain until the war's end and he had to return stateside. Months later, she left all of her family behind and sailed with 700 other war brides to America.

Evelyn and Jim settled in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, for the next 40 years, where they raised their family and made many lasting friendships. Upon retirement in 1991, they moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas. After 60 years of marriage, a match truly made in heaven, Jim passed away in 2005. Evelyn remained in Mountain Home, and resided at The Monroe House, until the Spring of this year, when she moved to be close to her son and family in Montana. It was hard for her to say good bye to all the acquaintances she had made in Mountain Home.

Like many others, Evelyn led a colorful life, but it was the simple things of life that brought her the most joy; friends, family, church and the love she shared with Jim. She was an avid golfer, reader, knitter and served in many capacities in church. For those that knew her, she truly enjoyed putting the needs of others ahead of her own. She had the beautiful gift of being able to befriend all that she met, young and old, and from every walk of life. She had a saying for all of life's different aspects. The one she modeled the most was- "Whatever you are, be that. Whatever you say, be true. Straight forward act, be honest in fact, be nobody else but you." She will truly be missed.

She was preceded in death by all her siblings, brother, Willie and sisters, Isobel, Hilda, Alice, and Bessie. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Bill) Anderson, formerly of Mountain Home, and now South Portland, Maine and their children Kristofer, Thea, Seth (Dania) and grandson, Owen. She is also survived by her son, Murray (Adele) McIntyre of Deer Lodge, Montana and their children, Megan (Hung) and Kyle (Kimberly) and grandson, Nolan.
