Donations for the family may be made to the George A Wolfe memorial fund at First Security Bank.
George was born on January 30, 1955, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to George and Deloris Wolfe. George grew up with the name ‘Skippy’ as there were so many Georges in the household. His three childhood homes were notable historic buildings: a stone farmhouse built in 1732, where his extended family that included his grandparents and the families of his seven uncles farmed; The Turks Head Tavern, dating from 1769; and the Sullivan House at Hershey’s Mill, circa the mid-1700s. George attended Anderson College (now Anderson University) in Indiana, studying theology and cherishing his job as the editor of the student newspaper. On
leaving Anderson, George moved to the Grand Canyon National Park to live and work at the park for the Fred Harvey Company. He mainly worked at the warehouse, receiving goods and purchasing souvenirs and Native American art. After several other purchasing jobs for various resorts and clubs in Michigan, Florida, and Alabama, George moved on to jobs as a record
store manager in New Mexico, Mississippi, and Arkansas. This allowed George the happy opportunity to share his great love of music with others every day. On August 31, 1989, George met Elizabeth Welch on Mackinac Island, where they both worked for Mission Point Resort. It was Elizabeth’s birthday. They were married on May 4, 1991, in
Covington, Louisiana, at the home of Elizabeth’s Aunt Nina and Uncle Bob Wiltse. They travelled by bus to their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, stopping for a honeymoon at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. After living in New Mexico, Alabama, and Mississippi,George chose the Twin Lakes area surrounding Mountain Home, Arkansas as the place he
would like to make their family home. There, George and Elizabeth raised two children, Olivia Celeste and Silas Lee.
George was a talented athlete, excelling at soccer and baseball (co-founding The Grand Canyon Jerks baseball team). A life-long scholar and writer, George composed countless poems, stories, cartoons, and essays. He avidly followed baseball, politics, history, literature, and more. Music was a treasure to George; he enjoyed all kinds from symphonic to folk, jazz, and early blues. Dearest to him were the brilliant rock musicians of his youth; first, Bob Dylan, then a multitude of others, including Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, John Cale, Brian Eno, Warren Zevon, and so many more that George followed and loved. He was known for his intelligence
and his kind, albeit troubled, soul.
George was preceded in death by his mother Deloris Yaeger Wolfe Hershey, his father George Albert Wolfe, and his brothers John ‘Jackie’ Wolfe and Edward ‘Eddie’ Wolfe. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, children Olivia and Silas, and his sister, Lora Maule of Oxford, Pennsylvania.
