James M. Birkeland was born February 4, 1917 at Chicago, Illinois to Julius A. and Grace E. Houchin Birkeland. He married Marie Kurka on October 18, 1942 at Chicago and worked as a supervisor in the petroleum industry. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He has lived in Cotter since 1977 having moved from Medinah, Illinois. He was a league bowler at the Riverlake Lanes in Mountain Home.He passed away on July 3, 2006 at Care Manor Nursing Home in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 89 years,4 months and 29 days. Survivors: One sister; Lois Selix and husband Clyde of Madison, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews including Sandra Kurka of Muskego, Wisconsin. Preceded in Death by: Parents and wife.
