James Caruthers

James ?Max? Caruthers, 83, went to be with his Lord and Savior November 26, 2011. He loved the First United Methodist Church where he served on various committees and was a trustee for 6 years and also, a member of the Seekers Sunday School Class.

He was born in Salem, Arkansas to Noah and Jessie (McCormick) Caruthers on November 12, 1928. He married Verna Lewellen Brittian on February 14, 1948 and they had two children, Jerys Elaine (Brian) Thrope and James Thomas Caruthers. He also had four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He enjoyed music, played guitar and keyboards and loved Hank Williams. He was a very talented musician and could play music by ear. He liked to quail and pheasant hunt with friends in Kansas. Max enjoyed auctions and took a class in auctioneering. He was a sales manager in the Sears Building Material Department in Wichita, Kansas and left his position to come home to Arkansas to his beloved farm. He built the house he designed and raised livestock, which he dearly missed when he moved to Mountain Home in 1993.

He fed his birds daily and even had two turtles that came to the window. For several years, there was also an albino squirrel, Frisky, that visited him often.

On march 14, 1980 he and Elouise Smith were married in Salem and had over 31 years of happiness. She brought four children, Kim J. (Gena) Smith, Christopher Smith, Cathy (Johnny) Miller and Patricia (Donald) Sanders; 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren to the family.

He loved fly fishing and belonged to the Gadflys Fly Tying Group.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Lewellen, 1 sister and her husband, Betty and Russ Hildereth.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:00 pm at Kirby & Family Funeral Home. The funeral will be 1:00 pm Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church of Mountain Home with Reverend Rodney Steele officiating. Burial will be at the Salem Cemetery with Dylan Smith, Michael Scott, Johnny Miller, Lyle Monger, Johnny Brown and Derek Crabb as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Gadflys Fly Tying Group.
