Johannes "Hans" Veldhuis

December 10, 1921 — May 27, 2014

Funeral Services for Johannes Marinus Veldhuis will be 2:00P.M., Thursday, June 5, 2014, at Mountain Home Baptist Church, with Reverend Bill Hughes officiating.

Johannes Marinus Veldhuis, of Sorrento, Florida, formerly of Mountain Home, Arkansas, entered into the glorious presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on May 27, 2014. He was 92, a man of rare faith, trusting absolutely in the finished work of Jesus Christ for all sin, for all time.

He was born December 10, 1921 in Almelo, Netherlands, to Jan and Marie Veldhuis, the youngest of four siblings. He served in the Dutch Military in World War II, both in the Dutch Army and Navy on the Pacific front where he experienced God's calling to missions work.

He was a missionary in Dutch New Guinea and served as the area's first field director for the Unevangelized Fields Mission, and later with The Evangelical Alliance Mission for nearly 20 years.

He immigrated to the United States with his wife, Eleanor and his 10 children in 1964, where he built Florida Cactus, Inc. in Apopka, Florida, before his retirement in 1977.

After retirement, Johannes spent his years memorizing scripture, ministering to the sick, preaching in local churches, leading Sunday School Classes, and traveling to see his many friends and family.

He is survived by his nine children: Dr. Suzanna L. Veldhuis Kuipers (Dr. Bernard Kuipers) of Rochester, MN; Dr. Johannes D. Veldhuis (Marcia) of Rochester, MN; Judith V. Lovestrand (Gordon) of Apopka, FL; Michael J. Veldhuis (Dawn) of Yuma, AZ; J. Stephen Veldhuis (Colleen) of Tullahoma, TN; E. Ruth Wilson (Alan) of Douglasville, GA; Rebekah E. Grimwood (David) of Mountain Home, AR; Paula P. Veldhuis of Sorrento, FL; and Stephanie Novakovic (Mio) of Sorrento, FL, one sister, Martha Veldhuis of Hamilton, Ontario, 36 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Braithwaite Harding, formerly of Ontario, Canada, the mother of his 10 children; daughter, Joanna Marie Karpiak of Miami, Florida; two brothers and his second wife, Lucille, of Zellwood, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to further missions through his missionary son and grandchildren.
