A Graveside Service for Leonard Nicholas "Sonny" Barkes of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 10:30 am, Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery, with Heather Marsalis officiating. Visitation will be Friday, January 24, 2020, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm, at Kirby & Family Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery, Mountain Home, Arkansas, with Tim Walach, Paul Bower, Andy Gann, Cory Quarles, Chris Martin, JL Hickman, Brian VanDeVeire and Nathan Frank as pallbearers.
Sonny passed away January 20, 2020, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 81. He was born March 23, 1938, in Aurora, Illinois, the son of George and Lucille Lee Barkes. He married Patricia Farnham on June 21, 1958, in Aurora, Illinois and was a heavy equipment operator for Caterpillar. Sonny lived in Mountain Home since moving from Oswego, Illinois, in 1989. He enjoyed working on cars, riding motorcycles, and watching Westerns.
Sonny is survived by his daughter, Lauri Martin of Mountain Home, AR; son, Nick (Tammie) Barkes of Mountain Home, AR; daughter, Peggy (Paul) Bower of Oswego, IL; ten grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, Richard and Edward Sr.; sister, Margie Szabo; and son-in-law, Chuck Martin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House of the Ozarks, 701 Burnett Drive, Mountain Home, AR, 72653.
