Mark Smith

March 29, 1950 — October 7, 2011

A Celebration of Life for Mark Ament Smith, III of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 11:00 am Thursday, October 13, 2011, at Jefferson Barracks, with Tim Deemer and Mark Smith IV officiating.

Mark went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in Heaven on October 7, 2011. He was born March 29, 1950, in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Mark Ament and Margaret Ann Gilmore Smith II. He was privileged to live all over the world, as his father was a career Army Officer. The family settled in Belleville, Illinois and Mark worked with his uncle in the cattle business at the stockyards in East St. Louis, Illinois. He graduated from Belleville Township High School east in 1968. After working for a year as an apprentice carpenter he joined the Army in March 1969. He served proudly in Vietnam, Ft. Riley Kansas and Mannheim, Germany and was discharged honorably in 1972 and an E-5 Specialist. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with DVC, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star and 2 overseas Service Ribbons. He met his beloved Carol in 1967 and they married in July 1969. He graduated from Rankin Technical Institute in 1974 and worked for Shell Oil as a machinist in Woodriver, Illinois from 1974 until 1978. They moved to Sinclair, Wyoming in 1978 and he work as a machinist then machine shop foreman until 2009 when ill health forced early retirement. In December, 2009 they moved to Mountain Home, Arkansas to enjoy the fishing in the lakes and rivers. Mark was a member of the Twin Lakes Gun Club and Life-Member of the National Rifle Association.

Mark was devoted to his wife Carol, and loved their 2 children and their only grandchild.

Mark is survived by his wife, Carol Schmitt Smith; son, Mark (Mary) Smith IV of
Casper, WY; daughter, Julie (Mike) DiPiano of Maryland Heights, MO; grandson,
Chance Smith and 3 sisters, Cassandra Wiggenhorn of Bethalto, IL, Stephanie (Jerry) Fitzgerald of Waterloo, IL and Jennifer (Tim) Deemer of San Antonio, TX; mother-in-law, Rose M. Schmitt of Ellisville, MO; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends and his special friend and hunting buddy Danny Sanchez of Cheyenne, WY.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Robert J. Schmitt.

Burial will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery with Scott Giroux,
Dennis Eckes, Danny Sanchez, Mike Sheller, Mark A. Smith IV, Mike DiPiano,
Ted Schmitt, Tim Deemer, Mike Schmitt, Jerry Fitzgerald, Matthew Wiggenhorn and
all his coworkers and friends at Sinclair Oil Refinery as honorary pallbearers.

In leiu of flowers Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Ozarks Hospice House, 701 Burnett Dr., Mountain Home, AR 72653.
