A Celebration of Life for Martha-Jane "Marty" Newton will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, November 20, 2015, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church with Father Jim McDonald officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Alley-White American Legion Post #52 and United States Army Air Corps Honor Guards.
Marty departed this earth on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at Baxter Regional Medical Center, Mountain Home, Arkansas. She was born in Iowa City, Iowa on March 19, 1946 at University Hospital and until she joined the Army; never living more than three blocks from the room she was born in.
As a child she enjoyed being a member of the United States Pony Clubs, the Girl Scouts and later acting in school plays.
After graduating from Iowa City High School in 1964, she attended Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing. A strong believer of Service to one’s country, she joined the Women’s Army Corps in 1969. In February 1971, she married Charles A. Dodge in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1976 she left the nursing field, went back to school and earned double degrees in Social Work and Sociology at the University of Iowa, while being a single mother to her son, working a year as a VISTA volunteer, and being a member of the Iowa Army National Guard. In October of 1983, she married Albert G. Newton, who she always referred to as her best friend at the Little Brown Church at Nashua, Iowa. She was a Charter Member of the Women in Military Service to America, Women’s Army Corps Alumni Association, served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children (CASA) in Baxter County and was honored to be awarded a State of Iowa Volunteer of the Year in 1981. Marty served on the Iowa City Community Needs Board for three years. Marty was a certified as a Chaplain in Arkansas in 2003, ministering to inmates at the County Jail and following St. Francis to help the owners of injured or deceased pets.
Marty is survived by her husband, Albert G. Newton, her son Jonathon Newton and his wife Lisa, two grandchildren, Danica Ivy and Bristol Eva Newton of Iowa, her brother Bob Wharton and his wife Pat of Minnesota , and her step-daughters, Debbera Fossom and Jennifer Reynolds and their families all of Iowa. She is preceded in death by both of her parents, Ardy’s Halliday Wharton and Mary Ruth Crumley, and her beloved Schnauzers Alex, Nicky, Deter, and Libby, who she firmly believed will be waiting for her at the Rainbow Bridge.
