A Graveside Committal Service for Norma Jean Browning, formerly of Bull Shoals, AR. will be held at 11AM Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Newton Flat Cemetery in Bull Shoals, AR. Norma was a descendant of the Newton and Johnson families who were original settlers of what is now Bull Shoals. She died September 2, 2010 in Magnolia, Texas. Norma was 84.
Norma was born September 22, 1925, to Edward Blake Johnson and Martha McBee Johnson. Her grandparents were William Jasper and Belle Newton Johnson. Her great grandparents, Abraham and Nancy Farmer Newton settled in the flats above Jimmie Creek, about 1867.
Norma grew up all over the country, her family following the jobs requiring heavy machine operators; bridges, excavations, etc. She remembered moving over 30 times before she reached third grade. She graduated from High School in Houston, where she married and remained to raise her daughters. She was a devoted grandmother and loved to quilt. Norma retired to Cut and Shoot, TX., then to Bull Shoals, AR and had moved Magnolia, TX. after the death of her husband, William E. Browning.
Norma is survived by her two daughters, Sue Burgess(Tom) of Magnolia, TX and Jean Marie Smith(David) of Kempner, TX; sister, Mary Blue Plant (John) of Conroe, TX; five grandsons, Paul Burgess(Patty) of Houston, TX, Seth Burgess(Eden) of Murphy, TX, Zeke Burgess(Anna Acero) of North Hollywood, CA, Daryn Smith and Louis Smith of Kempner, TX; three great-grandchildren, Charles, Isaac, and Teresa; beloved cousin, Daisy Johnson of Gassville, AR; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
