Richard Cole

Memorial services for Richard Shipley Cole of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 2:00 PM Friday, July 16, 2010 at First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Ed Matthews and Reverend Siegfried Johnson officiating. Inurnment will follow at Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery.

Richard Cole, 86, of Mountain Home, died March 9, 2010, under the care of Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock. Born November 28, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late N. Dean and Madge Shipley Cole of Mountain Home.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Cole Plafcan and Nancy Cole, two grandchildren, Cole Plafcan and Claire Plafcan Denham and three great-grandsons, William, Samuel and Paul Plafcan all of Little Rock.

His wife of 63 years, Marjorie Rose Patton Cole and his infant son, Shipley Cole preceded him in death.

Richard graduated in 1941 from Merchantville High School in New Jersey and in 1945 from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where he majored in chemistry and was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He served as a Lt. JG in the U.S. Navy on the USS Rixey, a casualty evacuation transport ship, in the Pacific Theater of World War II.

Richard and Marjorie married February 24, 1945 and moved to Jonesboro the following year where he joined his father-in-law in operating Patton Motor Co. a Ford automobile dealership. In 1966, the family moved to Mountain Home where Richard and Marjorie ran a boat business, Twin Lakes Marine, for the next twelve years. After retiring in 1978 they traveled widely in their recreational vehicle, including frequent stays in Chokoloskee, Florida.

Richard, an active Rotary club member, was named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mountain Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church, 605 West Sixth Street, Mountain Home, Arkansas 72653.
