A Funeral Service for Robert Lee Hackler of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 30, 2013, at First United Methodist Church, with Reverend Randy Ludwig officiating. Visitation will be 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm, Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the Hackler Intermediate School Media Center.
Robert passed away December 25, 2013, in Gassville, Arkansas at the age of 81. He was born December 15, 1932, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, the son of Herman and Gladys Robertson Hackler. He married Evelyn Baer on August 20, 1954, at Mountain Home, Arkansas. He graduated from Mountain Home High School in 1950, received a Bachelors of Education Degree and a Masters in Counselor Education Degree in 1966, from the University of Arkansas. He also has done additional graduate work in school administration.
Mr. Hackler began his teaching career as a mathematics teacher in Mountain Home High School in 1954. In 1955, he began a business career in Alabama, Georgia and Mountain Home. During these years he served as Oakland PTA President and was a member of the Mountain Home School Board for three years.
Robert returned to the public schools in 1961, as a high school mathematics teacher. He remained as a math teacher until he became a school counselor in 1965, a position he held until 1976, when he returned to the business community. During these years in high school Robert, along with his wife, Evelyn, sponsored junior and senior classes and sponsored Future Teachers of America Club. He also drove a school bus for three years and became a charter member of North Arkansas Twin Lakes chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.
While in private business as a realtor, land developer, home builder and banker, Robert spent 8 years on the Mountain Home School Board, six of those years as president and two years as a State School Board Regional Director. He also served one year as President of Twin Lakes Home Builders. He was at various intervals a member of the Lions Club, Mountain Home Planning Commission, the Baxter County Planning Commission, the Baxter County Industrial Park Board and the Baxter Regional Hospital Foundation Board. He also helped organize the Mountain Home Little League and served several years as a little league and peewee coach.
Mr. Hackler returned to the Mountain Home Schools as Assistant High School Principal in 1985. He remained in this position until he moved to Searcy in 1988 where he served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for two years.
Robert returned to Baxter County in 1990, as Superintendent of Cotter Schools. He remained as superintendent until his retirement from public education in 1997. In the summer of 1997, he returned to the business world as a part time banker, a job he held until December 2012.
Mr. Hackler's involvement with education was not over. In June of 1998, Governor Huckabee appointed him to the Arkansas State Board of Education. He served just over five years on the board, including one year as chairman, until his resignation due to health reasons.
Robert also served as a volunteer at the Mountain Home Christian Clinic.
Mr. Hackler spent 26 years working in public education and an additional 16 years as a member of public education boards.
In 2010, the new elementary school was named Hackler Intermediate School in honor of Robert and Evelyn Hackler.
Robert is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hackler of Mountain Home, AR; aunt, Jorayne Hackler of Mountain Home, AR; brother-in-law, Lawrence Baer of Broken Arrow, OK; sister-in-law, Carol Rogers of Atlanta, GA; nephew, Tim Rogers of Acworth, GA; two nieces, Camille (Pete) Walton of Acworth, GA and Laurie Ann (Jim) Waller of Tulsa, OK; many wonderful cousins, great nieces and great nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Burial will be in the Mountain Home Cemetery, Mountain Home, Arkansas, with Lewis Barnes, Sheridan Kirksey, Bill Self, George Lewis, Layton Lee and Bob Knight as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his former students.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
