Memorial Services for Dr. Russell Oris Pugh of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 10:30 AM Friday, July 1, 2011 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Jim McDonald officiating.
Russell died Friday, June 24, 2011 at Mountain Home, Arkansas, at the age of 83. Russell was born August 10, 1927 in Dekalb, Illinois, the son of Earl David and Winona Viola Roland Pugh. He married Mary Ellen Pugh on May 28, 1954 at Pittsburg, Kansas. Russell received his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas and was a Professor Emeritus for the University of Memphis. He retired as Chairman of the Department of Music at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. Russell was Principle Bassoonist in the Memphis Symphony and Mountain Home Symphony Orchestras and performed in a wide variety of musical productions throughout the world. Russell Pugh was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the West Point Military Academy Band. Russell lived in Mountain Home, Arkansas since 1996, moving from Memphis, Tennessee. He was a lifelong musician and educator, Master Gardener and a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and helped design the memorial garden at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
Russell is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ellen of Mountain Home, AR; 2 sons, David Pugh of Horn Lake, MS, Richard (Dawn) Pugh of Memphis, TN; daughter, Diane (Bob) Hoge of Springfield, TN; 4 grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Kristin and Katherine; 2 great-grandsons, Austin and Parker, and many wonderful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Burial will be at St. Andrew's Episcopal Columbarium.
Memorials may be made to the Baxter House Adult Center.
