With profound sadness we announce the passing of Shirley (Smith) Slaby, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to all whose lives she touched.
Shirley passed away on December 20, 2018, in Mountain Home, Arkansas at the age of 71. She was born in 1947 in St. Libory, Nebraska, a daughter of the late Albert and Marie (Jansen) Smith. She married Gary Slaby on March 18, 1983 in Lincoln, Nebraska where she enjoyed her career as a Shipping and Receiving Manager for Square D.
Shirley moved from Lincoln to Mountain Home 12 years ago and loved camping, boating and long motorcycle trips with her husband. She enjoyed playing games with friends like Pinochle, Euchre and Bunko, and her hobbies included quilting, reading, embroidery, flowers and gardening. Shirley had a gift for coordinating and decorating and brought to life vibrant ensembles and welcoming spaces inside and out for every season and holiday.
Shirley valued what life had to offer and joyfully embraced every moment. She had a lively personality, a knack for making people smile, and a gentle spirit that made strangers into friends wherever she went.
Shirley was the cherished wife of Gary Slaby and beloved mother of two daughters, Gerri (Hascall) Urbanovsky (Richard) and Sheila Hascall of Albany, NY. She was the loving grandmother of Chantel Smail-Gordon (Steve) and Madison Girmus (Nate). Proud great-grandmother of Elliana and Wesley Smail, Makin, Kagen, Ranson and Dashyn Girmus. Shirley also leaves behind sisters Jeanette Vogt, Roxana Fischer and Mary Alberti, and is survived and loved by many nieces and nephews and an abundance of friends.
It is said that those that touch our lives stay in our hearts forever, and Shirley was clearly one of those special souls.
The family will celebrate Shirley’s life privately, but suggests that memorials be made to Saint Jude Kids:
