Funeral Services for Virgil Fred Smith of Mountain Home, Arkansas, will be 3:00 PM Monday, May 23, 2011 at Kirby and Family Funeral Home Chapel, with Reverend Randy Ludwig officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until service time, Monday, May 23, 2011 at Kirby and Family Funeral and Cremation Services.
Mr. Smith died Thursday, May 19, 2011 in Mountain Home, at the age of 96. Virgil was born January 20, 1915 in Swergert, IL, the son of Charles and Nellie Sutton Smith. He married Dorothy Amundsen on April 19, 1997 at Mountain Home, AR. He worked as a Dispacher for Olin Chemical. Virgil was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. He lived in Mountain Home, Arkansas for 34 years, moving from Joliet, Illinois. He as a member of First United Methodist Church.
Virgil Smith is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Mountain Home, step-son, Robert (Darlene) Amundsen of Mountain Home, AR, step-daughter, Jessie (Wes) Higgins, of Quincy, IL, nephew, Jim Follmer, of Yorkville, IL, 2 nieces; Karen Fraher, of Pontiac, IL, and Connie Whiteside, of Wisconsin. 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorothy, 1 brother, and 4 sisters. Burial will be in the Baxter Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the Ozark V.F.W. Post #52 Honor Gaurd.
