William Lyon

June 19, 1916 — February 25, 2009

William died February 25, 2009 at Baxter Regional Medical Center. He was 92 years old. William was born June 19, 1916 at Hesston Kansas to Wilbank and Nettie Purgett Lyon. He married Barbara Jean Sett at Urbana, Illinois on December 10, 1939. William was a graduate of Watseka High School and the University of Illinois. He served in World War II participating in D-Day as a second lieutenant and was honorably discharged with the rank of major March 1st, 1946. William worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company for thirty five years. He retired in 1974 and moved to Lakeview from Western Springs, Illinois. William was active in the Food Pantry and enjoyed golf, fishing, bridge, square dancing and gardening. He was an active member of the Bull Shoals Presbyterian Church serving as an elder for many years and was instrumental in the building of the church fellowship hall. Survivors: William is survived by his wife Barbara Jean of Lakeview, Arkansas, son Kenneth Lyon and his wife Bonnie of Three Lakes, Wisconsin, son-in-law Ron Schmitz of Huntsville, Alabama, six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Preceded in Death by: He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Julie Schmitz, one brother and one sister. Funeral: A memorial service for William D. Lyon of Lakeview, Arkansas will be held Saturday January 28th at the Bull Shoals Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Mark Lenneville officiating. Burial: Burial will be in Kirby's Tucker Memorial Cemetery.
